How to stop Apple from automatically downloading new software for your Mac

There are a lot of reasons why Apple wants its users to keep their Mac software up-to-date, with security fixes and the latest features at the top of

the list.

So Apple has recently started automatically downloading the latest version of MacOS onto most people's computers. With the latest version of MacOS, Sierra, Apple is automatically downloading the major update, which takes up about 5GB of space. 

But there are reasons why you might not want to upgrade your operating system — to keep compatibility with certain software, for example.

Here's how to turn off Apple's nagging popups to update to the new MacOS. 

Start in System Preferences.

Click on "App Store."

You'll want to uncheck "Automatically check for updates" as well as "Download newly available updates in the background."

You're not done yet. Go into your Applications folder and look for a MacOS Sierra installer. Delete it. Don't worry, you can download it again later.
