A woman has
committed suicide, three years after her step-father – who repeatedly raped her
as a child – was cleared and acquitted by a court.
Juliet Crew,
an architecture student from Taunton in Somerset, was 22, when she died, a
Coroner’s Court heard today.
Crew, it was
gathered, left a note behind stating that she felt she had been let down by the
legal system.
Her
step-father, Nigel Parkin, 60, who is a church organist, had been accused of
repeatedly raping her over seven years, from the age of nine and allegedly
indecently assaulting another girl on two occasions.
However, a
jury found Mr Parkin not guilty of the eight rape charges and two of indecent
assault in 2012 after nearly 12 hours of deliberation.
Her
step-father was cleared after he said Juliet and another alleged victim were
both suffering from mental health problems.
According to
Taunton Coroners Court, the result of the proceedings took a severe toll on the
mental health of Juliet, she dropped to six and a half stone, self-harmed and
even overdosed on medication.
The note she
left behind read:”The judicial system in this country, especially for victims
of sexual offences, is disgusting.
“There is no
justice. It only confirmed that I cannot trust people. I do not want to live in
a world where there is no justice.”
Juliet mum,
Judith Parkin, told the inquest that she “never recovered from [the] feeling of
injustice” following her stepfather’s trial, reported Somerset Live.
Ms Parkin
further added that her daughter had hung herself at the hall of her home in
Taunton, Somerset, in August last year following several overdose attempts.
