Police in
Onitsha, the Anambra state capital, have read the riot act to criminals that
the city is no more conducive to their activities, which includes
pick-pocketing, bag-
snatching among other crimes.
The Divisional
Police Officer (DPO) in charge of Central Police Station (CPS), Mr. Mark
Ijarafu, a Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP), gave the warning saying that
the police was battle-ready for any criminal element during the festive period.
He noted that
the police in the city have identified flash points from where hoodlums operate
and have raided the places through its undercover officers and patrol teams of
the division.
Ijarafu noted
that police recently arrested a bag snatcher at Venn road after snatching a
lady’s handbag, unaware that a plain-clothes policeman was monitoring him. The
bag was recovered in this instance and the owner traced.
The DPO also
assured the public and travelers planning to come to the state for the holidays
that Ontisha was safe, saying that the police was partnering with vigilante
groups to provide adequate security across the state.
He noted that
the force was working round the clock to ensure free flow of traffic throughout
the holiday season, and advised the public to count on the police for their
protection and report any suspicious activity around them.
He warned
against use of fireworks by children during the celebration, a source of panic
and fear that could confuse security agents to the sound of actual gunshots by
criminal elements, in addition to the potential fireworks have in causing fire
outbreak due in the dry season.
