So-many new bloggers often asked me which of the above listed platform is
better for a Blogger?
So from my 3 years blogging experience, with the use of WordPress and Blogger, i will do
a WordPress.org, WordPress.com vs Blogger.com comparison, to help you decide which one is better for
your needs. I will cover all three pros and cons, so you can
make the best decision when it comes Blogger vs. WordPress as a platform for
your site.
Note: this comparison is between self-hosted
WordPress.org, Blogger.com and WordPress.com
1.
Ownership
Blogger is a blogging service provided by the tech giant Google. It is
free, reliable most of the time, and quite enough to publish your stuff on the
web. However, it is not owned by you. Google runs this service and has the
right to shut it down, or shutdown your access to it at any time.
WordPress.org, you use a WordPress hosting provider to host your own
site. You are free to decide how long you want to run it and when you want to
shut it down. You own all your data, and you control what information you share
with any third party.
WordPress.com is a blogging service provided by WordPress.com. It is not free, you pay for hosting services as follows :
1.Free Package: You cannot run ad and make money with it unlike Blogger, blog spot that allow you to place advert and make money with it, but Wordpress.com.com places paid ad on your articles as the cost of hosting this free package for you.
2. Personal Package: As at the time of writing this article this package cost 2.99 dollars/month
3. Premium Package: As at the time of writing this article this package cost 8.25 dollars/month
4. Business Package : As at the time of writing this article this package cost 25.92dollars/month.
But you own all your datas
2. Control
Blogger: has enough gadget that allows you to
the free native template to look like a standard website if you have basic HTML, CSS, JQUERY AND JSCRPT knowledge and your changes are save as long as you leave them untouched.
WordPress.org is an open source software, so you can
easily extend it to add new features but any update in the original source of your template override any changes you have made . There are thousands of WordPress plugins allowing you to
modify and extend the default feature set such as adding a store to your
website, creating portfolio, etc.
WordPress.com: in this case its almost the same as the wordpress.org
3. Appearance
Blogger by default only provides a limited set of templates to use. You
can modify the colors and layout of these templates using the built-in tools and even add some cool set of codes to create your own layout, you can even down and upload more beautiful templates if you wish contact me on this here.
WordPress.org: There are thousands of free and premium WordPress themes which allow you
to create professional looking websites. There is a WordPress theme for just
about every kind of website. No matter what your site is about, you will find
plenty of high quality themes which are easy to modify and customize, but they not free, you will pay to have their complete features to work , except for the native WordPress theme that come with your account.
WordPress.com: here your package determine the theme you have access to, you know what that means
4.Portability
Blogger: Moving your site from Blogger to a different platform is easy if you follow the instruction at the above link.
WordPress.org: you can move your site anywhere you want. You can move
your WordPress
site to a new host, change
domain name, or even move your site to other content management
systems.
WordPress.org: you cannot move your site any where
5.Security
Blogger : you have the added advantage of Google’s robust secure
platform. You don’t need to worry about managing your server’s resources,
securing your blog, or creating backups.
WordPress.org: is not secure, since it is a self hosted solution you are
responsible for security and backups. I lost two of my websites to spammers when i started blogging initially but if you are ready to pay there are plenty of WordPress plugins that make it easier for you to secure your site.
WordPress.com: it is quite secure since its a pay service
6.Support
WordPress.org: has a support community system. There is online
documentation, community forums, and IRC chatrooms where you can get help from
experienced WordPress users and developers. Apart from community support, there
are many companies offering premium support for WordPress.
7.Traffic and File Hosting
Blogger : There is unlimited file upload and traffic support
WordPress.org: Volume of file upload and traffic is limited to the amount of web disc space you can pay for (dictated by your site host company)
WordPress.com: Volume of file upload and traffic is limited to the amount of web disc space you can pay for (dictated by your hosting package)
8.Future
Blogger: Make update frequently, blogger even made interface update early November 2016 . but note that the future of Blogger depends on Google, and they have
the right to shut it down whenever they want, this is why you should always use a custom domain, so that if any thing happen you can move your domain to other hosting companies and your site will still be on the internet, but if you are the type that is relying on the blogspot , once any thing negative happened you lose your blog.
WordPress.org: is an Open Source software which means its future is not
dependent on one company or individual (Check out the history of WordPress).
It is developed by a
community of developers and users. Being world’s most popular content
management system, thousands of businesses around the globe depend on it.
Wordpress.com: same as in Blogger
I hope this comparison helped you understand the
pros and cons of each to help you make the right decision for your business.
