Centre for
Niger Delta Studies, in conjunction with the Bayelsa State Conflict Management
Alliance, yesterday, commenced the setting up of “No Grazing” signpost
s in farm
areas in Yenagoa and its environs.
The no grazing
signposts were conspicuously mounted in farm areas to prevent herdsmen from
grazing in such areas and in the process destroy the crops of local farmers.
Director of Centre for Niger Delta Studies, Dr. Sunday Abaraye, convener of the
awareness campaign, said that the exercise was aimed at encouraging herdsmen to
relocate to the state government approved Bayelsa Palm Estate. He said:
“The
aim of mounting the no grazing signposts at designated farm areas is to promote
peaceful coexistence in our communities. The herdsmen will know that they
cannot come in here with their cattle and graze anywhere they see vegetation.
The government’s new policy is that cattle should be taken to the Bayelsa Palm
for grazing. “Accordingly, we have decided to provide signs, “no grazing area”
around designated farm areas so as to avert a situation where the herdsmen will
move in their cattle and destroy what the local farmers had laboured to plant
as witnessed in other states. “We have the plan to take the exercise to our
rural communities in all the local government areas after we are done with
Yenagoa, the state capital. This, we believe, will help avert conflict between
farmers and the herdsmen because the latter will be guided by the ‘no grazing’
warning posts.”
