A civil
society group, Change the Change Coalition, on Thursday vowed to stage mass
protests if President Muhammadu Buhari failed to attend the next Federal
Executive Council meeting.
Buhari who has
hardly been seen in public in recent weeks, was absent at the last 2 FEC
meetings, which were chaired by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.
Reacting to
the development, the group warned that
it would
mobilize Nigerians to compel Buhari to officially transmit power to Osinbajo,
if he, once again, excuses himself from the next FEC meeting.
Instead of
staying away from work, Buhari should officially transmit power to Osinbajo, so
as to be free to travel abroad for more medical attention, the group said.
National
Coordinator of CCC, Mazi Bismarck Oji, spoke at a news conference in Enugu.
Oji likened
the current intrigues surrounding Buhari’s health to the situation that
prevailed in the Presidential Villa during the time of the late former
president, Umaru Yar’Adua.
He said, “What
we have before us is another Yar’Adua scenario – the President has been absent
from at least two FEC meetings consecutively.
“Firstly, the
Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed, told us the President was attending to
more important matters and delegated the Vice President to chair the meeting.
“What could be
more important than chairing weekly FEC meeting, more so when his attendance
would have allayed fears about his health status?
“Secondly, Lai
Mohammed told us the President would be working from home.
“That is an
insult on the intelligence of Nigerians and another episode in the theatre of
the bizarre which this administration has turned governance into."
