The Enugu
State Police Command on Sunday launched an investigation into the circumstances
surrounding the drowning of Justus Oruka in a well in Enugu State.
A statement
by the command’s spokesman, SP Ebere Amaraizu, issued in Enugu, said the incident
occurred at 10:00a.m. on Thursday, September 21, 2017. Amaraizu said the
Homicide and Criminal Investigation departments were doing everything they
could to unravel the cause of the incident.
He noted
that the victim, who lived at Uli Street, Ogui in Enugu, got drowned in a well
inside an uncompleted building located at Pocket Layout in Nkpokiti in the
state capital.
“People were
seen gathered in their large numbers in Nkpokiti axis of Enugu to see things
for themselves, while expressing shock and sorrow as they received the ugly
information about a man that allegedly got drowned in a well filled with water
at the house where he was working as a house keeper.
“It was
further gathered that when he was eventually recovered from the well and rushed
to Eastern Nigeria Medical Centre, he was confirmed dead by the doctor on
duty,” he said.
Meanwhile,
the police operatives are trying to unravel the circumstances surrounding what
could be classified as a sudden and unnatural death of the victim, whose body
has been deposited at the hospital mortuary for medical examinations.
In another
development, a retired Commissioner for Police and Ondo State chairman of
Association of Retired Polices of Nigeria (ARPON), Samuel Adetuyi, has urged
police officers across the country to desist from activities and conduct that
will dent the image of Nigeria Police Force (NPF).
Adetuyi said
this in Akure recently during the 70th birthday celebration, launching and
public presentation of his autobiography titled: “Policing in Nigeria: My
Story,” advising them to make crime less attractive in the society.
Despite all
the challenges facing security agencies in the nation, especially the police,
the former commissioner pointed out that they could still surmount all
difficulties for more effective service delivery.
He, however,
tasked government at all levels and the general public to prioritize training,
infrastructural development and welfare of the police, urging the latter for
more robust cooperation.
The book was
reviewed by the former Ondo State Head of Service, Ajose Kudehinbu, who told
the story of the author and the societal misconceptions against the police.
Kudehinbu,
as contained in the book, advocated that the police should prioritize the
purchase of dogs to enhance effective policing, revealing that the public obey
dogs more than human orders.
