The
President-General of Ndigbo apex organisation, Ohanaeze, Chief John Nwodo, has
charged the re-elected Governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano, to be
magnanimous in victory, put campaign rhetorics apart and extend a hand of fellowship
to his opponents.
The Ohanaeze
President-General in a congratulatory message to the governor for his decisive
victory also saluted the opponents for a healthy and competitive encounter.
Nwodo said the fact that all the people of Anambra State came out to vote is
most commendable, adding that security personnel deserve congratulations for
the secure atmosphere in which the elections were conducted. Ohanaeze noted
also that the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, so far appeared
transparent and must be given a pat on the back. “I congratulate Governor
Obiano for his decisive victory. I congratulate his opponents for a healthy and
competitive encounter, I also congratulate Mr President for keeping to his
words to ensure a free, fair and credible election”, Nwodo said Okorocha
praises Obiano Also yesterday, chairman of All Progressives Congress, APC,
Governors Forum and Imo State governor,
Rochas Okorocha, celebrated Willie
Obiano’s victory and urged his party’s candidate, Tony Nwoye, not to go to
court, just as he blamed APC for Nwoye’s failure. Okorocha’s stand on the
election was made known in a statement in Owerri by his Chief Press Secretary,
Mr. Sam Onwuemeodo, saying Obiano’s victory was incontrovertible. The release
read: “Imo State Governor and chairman, All Progressives Congress Governors’
Forum, Owelle Rochas Okorocha, has congratulated the candidate of All Progressive Grand Alliance, APGA, in the Anambra State
Governorship election, Chief Willie Obiano over his victory at the poll. “The
governor said Mr. Obiano’s victory was too clear to be contested or questioned
and, therefore, advised the candidates of other political parties who took part
in the election to congratulate Chief Obiano and avoid going to court to
question his victory. “Governor Okorocha also expressed regret over the loss of
his party, the APC in the election and attributed the loss of his party in the
election to internal wrangling and lack of genuine commitment on the part of
the party’s leadership in the state.” APC urges candidates to concede defeat
The APC yesterday also congratulated
Gov. Obiano “who has been declared winner of the Anambra governorship
election,” urging other candidates, including its own, Tony Nwoye, to accept
the outcome of the polls. The party’s position was contained in a statement,
yesterday, in Abuja and signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam
Bolaji Abdullahi. “We appeal to other candidates and parties who participated
in the election to accept its outcome as a true reflection of the will of the
Anambra people,” APC counselled. APC also congratulated its candidate “Dr Tony
Nwoye for his impressive performance at the election and his graciousness in
conceding defeat. We commend the Independent National Electoral Commission
INEC, for conducting what is regarded as a credible election, which passes the
integrity test.” I’ve closed the chapter — Obaze Governorship candidate of the
Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the election, Mr. Oseloka Obaze, said,
yesterday, that he had closed the chapter on the election as he would not
challenge the outcome in court. Addressing reporters at his campaign office in
Awka, Obaze, however, said he would not stop his party from challenging the
result if it decided to do so. He said: “There was a lot of inducement during
the election. Generally, the turnout was low, but it was surprising that the
turnout was high in just few places. “That we have decided not to challenge the
result does not mean that the process was faultless. I am a loyal party man and
the party is supreme. If the party, however, decides to challenge the outcome
of the election, so be it. But I, Oseloka Obaze, will not personally challenge
it. “I wish to congratulate His Excellency, Governor Willie Obiano and his
running mate, Dr. Nkem Okeke, on their victory. I wish both of them well. “I
salute my other fellow contestants for their valiant efforts and the decorum
during the campaigns. Thank you for promoting peace.” IGP hails police for
