OLEH—THE
people of Igbide community, Isoko South Local Government Area, Delta State,
have described as malicious and unfounded, media reports that a fine of N1
million was imposed on male indigenes of the community, who fled the area in
the
recent bloody clash with neighbouring Okpolo-Enwhe over a disputed piece of
land.
Reacting to the media reports, President of Igbide Union, Chief David
Edegware, in a statement, yesterday, said “To further prove the point that
Igbide community is not the aggressor in this conflict and that we have always
toed the path of peace, on June 13, 2016, information came to us that an
Okpolo-Enhwe man and his wife strayed into our territory and were apprehended.
“Despite the tension, this information generated, the Ovie of Igbide and the
President managed the situation to forestall the rise in tempers that may lead
to another bloody clash. Thus, the man, Mr. Onowakpo and his wife were promptly
handed over to the security operatives who took them in their vehicle to
Enhwe.”
Maintaining that the publication was based on speculations, hearsays,
the statement added that “It is therefore, safe to conclude that there is no
truth whatsoever in the claim that Igbide community did at any time impose a
fine or levy whatsoever on any indigene as fallout of the crisis.
“Ordinarily,
Igbide community would have ignored the hogwash as it is in the litter bin of
truth loving Deltans, but for the magnitude of misrepresentation and failed
attempt to portray Igbide as the aggressor and in bad light, we therefore, feel
duty-bound to clear the air.”
