UMUAHIA—As the
tussle for the Abia state governorship position lingers, Ohanaeze Youth Council
has warned a group known as South East Elders to stop making statements capable
of causing A breach of peace in the state.
The youth group
insisted that since Gov. Okezie Ikpeazu has filed a notice of appeal and motion
for execution against the judgment delivered by Justice Okon Abang, all parties
and their supporters should give peace a chance.
In a statement signed by its
Chairman of State Chairmen, Mazi Alex Okemini, the youth council stated that
the situation in Abia has thrown up some faceless groups who are being
sponsored to cause a crisis and urged the security agencies to investigate any
groups behind any inciting statement. It will be recalled that unknown groups
had recently threatened to invade the Government House in Umuahia if Uche Ogah
was not sworn in and warned that such comments cannot emanate from an Igbo
group recognized by Ohanaeze Ndigbo. According to the statement, “On the tussle
over the governorship position in Abia state, we are warning groups like the so
called South-East Elders and another one who parades itself as Ngwa bu otu to
give peace a chance in Abia State.
Gov. Ikpeazu has appealed the judgment of
the Federal High Court, Abuja. The courts should be allowed to do their job. The
governor has exercised his fundamental rights and no amount of propaganda will
solve the situation in the state. We warn those who are working to destabilize
Abia to refrain from such acts.
“Dr Ikpeazu has the mandate of Abians and until
the appeal court decides otherwise, he remains the Governor of Abia State.
There is no constitutional crisis in Abia state as the fake group implied but
rather, an attempt by desperados to carry out a civilian coup using the toga of
a court ruling that is under challenge
at a superior court.”
Ohanaeze youths called on Ikpeazu not to be deterred by
the antics of the group and their sponsors, stressing that it would not allow a
coup against Abia people.
