ABUJA – Former
President of the Senate, Mr. David Mark alongside his predecessor Mr. Ken
Nnamani as well as ex- Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Masari
paid a visit to President Mohammadu Buhari on Monday at the presidential
villa,
Abuja.
This would be the first known time, Mark would be sighted anywhere in
the Villa since Buhari assumed office on May 29, 2015.
But at different times
before now, Namani and Masari who is currently the governor of Katsina,
Buhari’s home State had visited. While Nnamani and Masari arrived together,
Mark later came in and was accompanied to Buhari’s office by Senior Special Assistant
to the President on National Assembly Matters (Senate), Ita Enang. Similaly,
Governor of Zamfara State and Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, NGF,
Abdulziz Yari also visited the Villa. Though his visit coincided with the
others, it was not known whether his coming had any connection with that of the
former leaders of the National Assembly.
The meetings held behind closed door
and there was no official status on them. But the air around the villa was
heavy with feelings of the widely speculated impeachment of the president by
the senate.
Recall that media reports made the rounds last week alleging that
the Senate was contemplating to launch impeachment proceedings against Buhari.
Though the senate later denied such move, Buhari’s All Progressives Congress
(APC) while reacting to reports rather described the move as a joke taken too
far.
Besides this, another reason that was speculated as to why the political
heavyweights stormed the villa was the apparent frosty relationship between the
presidency and Senate owing the trial of current Senate President, Bukola
Saraki, his deputy, Ike Ekweremadu and two others over alleged forgery of the
Senate Standing Rules.
Recall also that outside from the forgery case, Saraki
is also facing trial at the Code of Conduct Tribunal, CCT, for alleged false
declaration of assets.
