The National Emergency
Management Agency (NEMA), on Monday, said the Borno State government was not responsible
for people being malnourished in the North East, but however blamed Boko Haram
for the humanitarian crisis in the region.
The NEMA Zonal
Coordinator for the North East, Mohammed Kannar, while handing over relief
material to the Borno State Deputy
Governor, Usman Manmam Durkwa, in Maiduguri, said that these people have been
in the custody of the terrorists so the government is not to blame.
It would be recalled
that reports emerged about the internally displaced people (IDPs) numbering
over 25, 000 in Bama camp that were said to have been abandoned, starved and
seriously malnourished with about 20 daily deaths.
Mr. Kannar said,
"The governments was not responsible for the cases in Bama camps. Many of
these people were starved and malnourished even before they were rescued by the
military.”
He added, "In
continuation of our MoU [Memorandum of Understanding] with Borno State
government, we have released some food items for Borno State government for a
period of one-month and all these items cover 13 IDPs’ camps within Maiduguri.”
The following food
items were released by NEMA to the State government; rice 8000 bags of 25kg,
beans 3000 bags of 50kg, millet 1200 bags and maize 1200 bags.
Mr. Kannar also
said, "We are donating nutritional supplements to address malnourished
people because it might be a month before they fully recover."
In his remarks, Mr.
Durkwa, thanked the NEMA and NGOs for their support to humanity.
“We are thankful for
the released of relief materials and I promise you we are going to distribute
to IDPs.”
