Ten persons have
been confirmed dead with nine others ‘critically’ injured after a commuter bus
manoeuvred and skidded off the road into a ditch at Itose village along
Ibadan-Oyo Road on Saturday evening.
A source who
witnessed the incident said that driver of the Toyota Hiace commuter bus with
number plate LSD 191 XK – that was travelling from Sango-Ota in Ogun
State to
Ilorin, Kwara State – lost control as he was making an attempt to manoeuvre his
way after suddenly running into a pothole in the middle of the road.
The source said:
“The condition of the road caused the accident. There are several
potholes in the middle of this road and several drivers have fallen victims.
The driver of the passenger bus was trying to manoeuvre his way when he lost
control and fell into the ditch below. Ten people died on the spot.”
Also confirming the incident, Oluwaseun Onijala, the Public Relations
Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps in Oyo State, disclosed that 10 people
died on the spot while the nine injured in the accident were rescued and rushed
to the hospital for immediate treatment.
He said, “The bus had 19 passengers on board. Ten persons died while nine
other passengers sustained injuries. The injured victims were taken to the
Akinlolu Hospital and St. Patrick’s Hospital where they are receiving
treatment. The remains of the dead passengers were deposited at the Adeoyo
State Hospital morgue in Ibadan.”
