Beyonce uses MTV VMA's to make powerful protest about black men killed by police in America

Beyonce stole the MTV video music awards using the event to make a powerful protest over the death of black men by police in America.

The singer scooped seven gongs in total including the prestigious prize for video of the year for the track Formation.

Before the awards began the Crazy in Love star appeared on the red carpet with the mothers of the four men, Trayvon Martin, Eric Garner, Michael Brown and Oscar Grant III.

Sybrina Fulton, Gwen Carr, Lezley McSpadden and Wanda Johnson had all seen their sons lives ended prematurely - three by police and one by a neighbourhood watch volunteer.

But as the 34-year-old later took to the stage to perform a 16-minute medley of songs from her hit album, Lemonade, she made a further protest while surrounded by backup dancers dressed as angels.

As red lights flooded the stage, each of the ‘angels’ was shot down during the performance, which viewers believed was a representation of police brutality.
The capacity crowd at New York’s Madison Square Garden reacted with cheers along with many who applauded her move on social media.
