Rio Olympics: Athletics: Ogunlewe, Egwero out as Bolt shows class

The two Nigerian athletes entered for the 100m men’s event at the Rio Olympics have failed to progress to the semi final of the event even as Jamaican Usain Bolt showed class on Saturday, cruising effortlessly to the next phase.

Seyi Ogunlewe, who is Nigeria’s fastest man at the moment, with back-to-back national titles, finished fourth in his Heat where he ran a 10.26s while his compatriot, Ogho-Oghene Egwero, could only manage a sixth place finish in his race where he recorded a slower 10.37s.
The two times recorded by the Nigerian duo was unable to qualify them as one of the fastest losers as they ended being ranked 34th and 51st respectively.
Meanwhile, Usain Bolt won his own qualifying heat in the men’s 100 meters with a time of 10.07s, pulling in front at the midpoint after a slow start.
Bolt, who is out to complete a hat trick of gold medals in the 100m in Rio, finished well ahead of others even with enough room to spare that he was able to give the timing clock a glance as he passed through finish line.
It is yet to be seen if his semi final race will be that easy on Sunday as the Jamaican has been lined up to run in Heat 2 alongside the likes of Kim Collins and Britain’s Chijiundu Ujah.
Meanwhile earlier in the day, two Nigeria athletes progressed to the semi finals of the women’s 400m event. The duo are Patience Okon George and Magaret Bamgbose.
