When Green Day premiered “Bang Bang,” they made it clear their new single was inspired by the gun violence plaguing America. There are no shots fired in its new music video, but

the theme is there -- even if Green Day and director (and Rancid frontman) Tim Armstrong decided to give it an unexpected twist.

In the new video that debuted on Tuesday morning (Sept. 13), a trio of bandits who look just like Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt and Tré Cool pull off a bank heist while the band rocks in someone’s living room. Then things get complicated… 

The video's release helped push Green Day's "Bang Bang" to No. 1 on the Billboard Twitter Realtime Trending 140 chart. Their new album, Revolution Radio, hits stores Oct. 7. Here’s what Billie Joe Armstrong told Rolling Stone about its themes last month: 

"It's about the culture of mass shooting that happens in America mixed with narcissistic social media," he said. "There's this sort of rage happening, but it's also now being filmed and we all have ourselves under surveillance. To me, that is so twisted. To get into the brain of someone like that was freaky. It freaked me out. After I wrote it, all I wanted to do was get that out of my brain because it just freaked me out."
