Nigerian Navy arrests militant leader, pirates in N’Delta

The Nigerian Navy has arrested a top militant leader of the Bakassi Strike Force identified as Uduak Thompson in Calabar, Cross River State.

The Director of Information of the Nigerian Navy, Commodore Christian Ezekobe, said in a statement on Wednesday that Thompson alias Sangata was arrested at his hideout in Calabar by a joint team from the Nigerian Navy Ship, Victory, and the Defence Intelligence Agency on Tuesday.
He said the navy had earlier arrested some members of the militant group.
He added that another naval patrol team deployed in the Naval Outpost, Ikuru, arrested four suspected pirates alleged to be responsible for several robbery operations at Oyorokoro, Ataba, and Kaa communities in the Andoni Local Government Area of Rivers State.
He said the gang allegedly attacked some market women at Oyorokoro community on September 4,2016
He said, “As part of efforts to eliminate unwholesome activities perpetuated by criminals in the Niger Delta, the Nigerian Navy has arrested one of the top leaders of a group which goes by the name Bakassi Strike Force.
“The suspected militant, Mr. Uduak Thompson a.k.a. Sangata, was arrested on September 12, 2016 at his hideout in Calabar by a joint team from Nigerian Navy Ship, Victory and Defence Intelligence Agency. It would be recalled that some top members of the BSF had earlier been arrested.” PUNCH
