Vladimir Putin has
held a meeting in the Kremlin with Eton school pupils - who made a sneaky dig
at his height.
The boys from one of
Britain's most elite school met the Russian president - gaining access to the
building's inner sanctum.
The prestigious
college - which has educated a staggering 19 UK Prime Ministers and counts
among other alumni the Cold War spy Guy Burgess - apparently had no prior
knowledge or involvement.
Moreover, the boys
are believed to have arranged the 'clandestine' visit by themselves - on their
own initiative - although exact details of how it came about remain unclear.
The rare meeting,
held in a state room, is rumoured to have lasted for at least an hour.
It is understood
Putin used the opportunity to discuss world affairs with the 11 boys
The boys didn't
appear to have signed any confidentiality agreements barring them from
discussing the meeting - as they have been gushing about it since on social
media.
One of them, Trenton
Bricken, posted on Facebook: "Two hour meeting with President Putin. He
was small in person but not in presence."
One of them, David
Wei, revealed he had sent more than 1,000 emails in advance to arrange the
encounter.
He claimed that
Putin - who has a reputation as a tough leader - had revealed "his human
face".
He posted: "It
took me a total of ten months, 1040 emails, 1000 text messages, countless
sleepless nights, constant paranoia during A2 exam season, declining academic
performance...but here we are.
"Guys, we truly
gave Putin a deep impression of us and he responded by showing us his human
face."
Pictures circulating
on social media showed the group shaking hands with the Premier.
They also showed the
group - wearing translation headsets - sat around a table listening to the
Russian leader.
Later on they also
posed for an informal group photo in an ante room - apparently celebrating
their success in getting access to one of the most powerful men in the world.
Earlier this year, a
Russian Orthodox abbot said to be close to the president, Father Tikhon
Shevkunov, spoke at the college - although it is not clear if he had any
involvement in setting up the meeting.
The school said in a
statement: "This was a private visit by a small group of boys organised
entirely at their own initiative and independently of the college."
The Kremlin is yet
to comment publicly on the meeting.
