A prostitute’s
daughter spent the first six weeks of her life “detoxifying from drugs” after
being born in a “crack den”, a family court judge has been told.
Judge Laura Harris
said the little girl - now 11 months old - had come into the world in the “most
distressing circumstances”.
She heard that the
youngster’s mother had been seen smoking crack cocaine and heroin the night
before giving birth and had received no antenatal care.
The little girl had
been delivered by her father - who also had a history of drug misuse.
Her parents had
abandoned her shortly after she was born.
Judge Laura Harris heard
how the girl's mum had been seen using drugs the night before giving birth
Detail of the case
has emerged in a ruling by Judge Harris following a family court hearing in
London.
No-one involved was
identified.
The judge referred
to the little girl as “Baby L”.
Social workers at a
council in London had asked the judge to make decisions about the little girl’s
future.
They wanted the
youngster placed for adoption .
But the judge
decided that the little girl should live with a grandmother.
“This is a very sad
case,” said Judge Harris in her ruling.
“The parents have
both misused unlawful drugs.
“The mother has a
chronic history of drug abuse including crack cocaine and heroin.
“L came into the
world in the most distressing circumstances.
“She was born in
what the police described as ‘a known crack den’ and had been delivered by her
father.”
The judge added:
“The mother had been seen to be smoking crack cocaine and heroin the night
before giving birth. She had received no antenatal care.
“Unsurprisingly, L’s
toxicology results tested strongly positive for cocaine and opioids.
“She was suffering
from drug withdrawal.
“She showed typical
signs of this disorder, namely a high-pitched cry, was hypertonic, irritable,
was sneezing and displayed wakefulness.
“The extent of her
drug withdrawal treatment meant that she remained in hospital until ... she was
six weeks of age.”
Judge Harris said
the little girl had been placed with a foster carer after “detoxifying from
drugs”.
A doctor had told
the court that no-one could predict what impact exposure to such “huge stress”
would have on the little girl in the long-term.
The doctor said the
“worst effects” might not materialise until she had grown up.
