The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Mahmud Mohammed, has said that the National Judicial Council will consider an application by a civil society group demanding media coverage of court sessions
in the country.
The group, Civil Advocacy for Social and Economic Rights, CASER, made the request in response to the recent controversy over the arrests of judges accused of corruption.
Seven judges were arrested by the State Security Service on October 7.
The Executive Director of CASER, Frank Tietie, said opening court sessions to the media would ensure greater transparency of the judiciary.
In a letter to the group’s leader, Mr. Mohammed promised that the NJC would consider the request at its next meeting scheduled to hold in November.
“Reference your letter dated 20th October, 2016 to The Honourable, The Chief Justice of Nigeria and Chairman of the National Judicial Council, Hon. Justice Mahmud Mohammed, GCON on the above subject matter. I have been directed to inform you that your request will be considered by the Council at its next meeting which is scheduled for 2nd and 3rd November, 2016 and the outcome of which will be communicated to your office, please,” the statement said.
The letter was signed by Mr. Mohammed’s Secretary, Danladi Halilu,Premiumtimes
