Stoke City’s
Joe Allen cancelled out Manchester United Anthony Martial’s superb curling
strike as they earned a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford to mark another frustrating
day
for Manchester United. Manchester United dominated the play, with 67 per
cent possession and 20 shots at the goal to seven by Stoke, but one error after
the other denied them the full three points.
After Glen
Johnson’s strike was palmed away by David De Gea, Jonathan Walters chipped a
cross onto the bar and into the path of Allen, who slammed it into the roof of
the net with 83 minutes gone.
Substitute
Martial had earlier found the top right corner with a superb strike before, in
the closing stages, Paul Pogba rattled the crossbar with a close-range header
from Marcus Rashford’s whipped cross as the hosts pressed for a winner.
Man Utd
could have been in front in the first half but were denied by a brilliant
display from Stoke goalkeeper Lee Grant, making his Old Trafford debut.
Grant
produced a wonderful one-handed stop when Zlatan Ibrahimovic was clean through
with two minutes gone, and he made another fine reflex save from Jesse
Lingard’s close-range volley on the way to earning his side a point. Grant was
named man of the match.
Jose Mourinho felt it was United’s best performance of
the season, despite the result, and was understandably frustrated. He said
Stoke keeper Lee Grant deserved the Man-of-the-Match award.
