Help stop quacks, LASG tells NMA

The Lagos State Government has called on members of the Nigerian Medical Association and other regulatory bodies in the medical profession to complement the government’s efforts to curb activities
of quacks.
The state Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, who observed that quacks had done damage to public health, spoke on Monday at the 11th induction ceremony for medical doctors by the Lagos State University College of Medicine and the inauguration of roll of honours on individuals who contributed to the growth of the college.
Ambode, who was represented by the Deputy Governor, Dr Idiat Adebule, urged the 54 newly inducted doctors to abide by the provisions of the oath of professional practice to which they had pledged by using their skills to save lives.
He said, “You must also be part of efforts to curb the activities of quacks in the medical practice. You must arm yourselves with the vision of the founding fathers of the college.”
The governor said his administration placed high premium on health care, adding that such had necessitated the huge investment government had made in the health sector.
The Provost of the college, Prof. Babatunde Solagberu, said the college had witnessed transformation through massive infrastructural development since the beginning of the Ambode administration.
He said the college would produce the first set of dental surgeons by a state university college of medicine in Nigeria when Lagos celebrates its 50 years in 2017.
One of the honorees on the occasion and a former Military Administrator of Lagos State, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (retd.), said the establishment of the college during his administration was motivated by the need to produce more indigenous doctors for the country.
