LAGOS—There
was palpable tension at Eredo community in Epe area of Lagos, weekend,
following the arrest and detention of two pregnant women at the Epe
Divisional
Headquarters, allegedly on the orders of a land-grabber in the community.
The
reason for the arrest was not immediately known, but an eyewitness said the
women were being held after they reported a case of assault and battery against
some hoodlums alleged to be working for the land-grabber in the community.
The
case reportedly took a different dimension after the land-grabber sent his
representatives to the police station to insist that the women be held until
their husbands show up.
According to Vanguard report, their husbands had earlier gone
into hiding for fear of being killed by thugs alleged to be working for the
said land-grabber. According to sources, the women, identified as Mrs.
Olumuyiwa Adejoke, 33, and Rita Sanni, 25, both at different stages of
pregnancy, had gone to the police station to report a case of assault and
battery by some hoodlums, allegedly working for the land-grabber. However, their cases turned against them on the orders
of the land-grabber.
The source added that the particular land-grabber had been
locked in a face-off with members of the community over attempts to have his
name on the original survey plan of the vast community land.
The source added
that those opposed to his plans were being incessantly harassed with police.
It
was gathered that most of the villagers had since fled the community for fear
of the unknown.
Police react However, contacted, Lagos State Police spokesman,
ASP Olarinde Famous-Cole, stated that they were not detained. He added that
there was a report, which was later referred to the Area Command.
