Former
governor of Lagos state, Bola Ahmed Tinubu failed to show up for a boxing match
he was scheduled to have with boxing champion, Evander Holyfield.
The boxing
match was to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Lagos state. Governor Akinwunmi
Ambode announced Tinubu's absence around 10:28 PM on Friday night, stating that
the national leader of the ruling APC could not show up due to an urgent
"national assignment". He also issued an official apology.
Tinubu's
aide, Mr Rahman Tunde confirmed Ambode's statements by saying that "There
was no embarrassment of any form because Gov. Ambode stood in for him".
Rahman also disclosed that "Tinubu prepared elaborately for the day. He
had unusual workout and training sessions. But just then when he was set for
the Landmark Event Centre for the highly-highly-anticipated bout, some national
exigency emerged that he needed to attend to."
The referee
of the fight, Prof. Wole Soyinka sent the crowd reeling with laughter when he
shockingly announced the disqualification of both Tinubu and Holyfield because
"both men did not take a drug test before the fight".
