.Senate warns
against frivolous corrupt petitions
The Federal
Government will provide a counterpart funding of about N3 billion for the 2017
-2018 planned measles campaign through a supplementary budget.
Chairman,
Senate Committee on Primary Health Care and Communicable Diseases, Senator Mao
Ohuabunwa, disclosed this yesterday when Seth Berkley, the chief executive
officer of the Global Alliance For Vaccine and Immunisation (GAVI) led a
delegation to the committee.
“National
Assembly is aware that Nigeria is expected to provide a counterpart funding of
about $11 million (which is approximately N3billion) for the 2017 -2018 planned
measles campaign, “ Ohuabunwa stated.
He said the
senate committee was meant to drive on the required efficiency and
accountability of many of the country’s partnerships including Gavi in order to
reposition the healthcare system.
GAVI was
said to have been bridging the gap in vaccine financing among many countries of
the world and has been doing great intervention in the healthcare system in the
country.
However,
Ohuabunwa asked Gavi to grant Nigeria the permission to pre-fund activities for
the measles campaign pending when the operational funds from Gavi and the
Federal Government would be released.
Meanwhile,
Senate yesterday called for caution against the submission of frivolous
petitions to its committee handling petitions on corrupt practices from
government owned establishments.
It also
observed that the use of mischievous petitions account for the seeming weakness
and failure of the anti-graft agencies in prosecuting cases on corrupt
allegations.
