RESIDENTS of
Asaba, the capital city of Delta State, have raised the alarm over the
increasing number of strange and unregistered commercial tricycles operating in
the
metropolis and its environs. They alleged that such tricycles are dangerous
and are the ones used by robbers to carry out crime in the town and then escape
without knowing their identities.
Accoding to
The Pointer yesterday, Mr. Valentine Maduka, who was a victim of tricycle
thieves, said the increasing number
of strange
and unregistered tricycles in town is alarming and has increased crime rate in
the town.
According to
him, “from the look of things, these tricycle robbers are not residing
in the town;
they may come from other states and after committing crime, they escape back to
invade arrest.”
“I am
calling on the chairman of tricycle and motorcycle union to be vigilant and
check this ugly trend; this set of tricycle operators are thieves using
commercial
tricycles to
carry out their criminal acts.”In the same vein, Miss Joy Obaro, a tailor in
Anwai road, said that she went to Ogbeogonogo Market to buy some materials, but
before she could get there, she was robbed by two other passengers in the
tricycle.
According to
her, “I lost my handset, my purse containing N30, 000 and other personal
documents and effects. After stealing my money, they pushed me out of the
tricycle and they escaped. Till date, they are nowhere to be found and the
worst is that I cannot even recognise them if I see them.”
Others who
were victims of tricycle robbery
at one time
or the other said that the tricycle operators who carry out robbery on their
passengers don’t even belong to any tricycle park in town.
They said
that what they do is rove round town, looking for unsuspecting members of the
public to rob and then disappear out of the area, hence we are calling on
government, the union, security agencies to check the increasing number of
unregistered commercial tricycles operating
in town,
these ones are robbers, thieves and kidnappers, the respondents said.
