Guinea’s
President and African Union (AU) Chairman, Prof. Alpha Conde and former
President Olusegun Obasanjo are to speak today on engineering for the
socio-
economic development of Africa at the third African Engineering Deans
Council (AEDC) summit
The event,
holding at Covenant University Ota, Ogun State, is to create a synergy between
the profession and the academia in a bid to move the continent forward.
At a
pre-event press conference, the council’s President Global, Prof. Peter
Kilpatrick, said the occasion was to solve the pressing challenges of income
inequality, sustainability, energy, water, housing as well as employment and
food for the one billion new persons who need to be served over the next 30
years on the continent.
He said: “If
engineers do not lead in these endeavors, which will require great
technological innovation and skill, who will? In addition to the need for you
as engineering leaders of academic institutions, to lead, it is also critically
important that you train and educate your students to lead.
“They must
not only be trained, educated, and informed through your inspiring efforts;
they must also be intrinsically motivated to give up themselves to serve their
countries and the people.”
