If Kid Rock really is running for Senate in Michigan, he's clearly borrowing a page out of
his pal Pres. Trump's playbook when it comes to launching a political campaign with lots of smoke and fire. Because just like Trump announced his entry into the presidential race in 2015 with a bombastic press conference in which he opened up with both barrels on at Mexico, China and Japan, the Bull God appears to be heralding his entry into the realm of politics with guns blazing. Literally.
A day after a Kid Rock for Senate site launched amid claims from skeptics that it was possibly a promotional stunt for Rock's new music -- a claim Rock denied -- Detroit's finest dropped a pair of new songs and videos that might be the least likely entreé into the political sphere on record.
In the country-swinging "Po-Dunk," Rock hangs with pregnant moms smoking cigarettes in their underwear, bikini clad models firing guns at watermelons and cans of beans, good ol' boys muddin' in four-wheelers and blazing up wooden pallet bonfires in the front yard and regular folk drinking in makeshift truck bed swimming holes. The down-home Americana gothic images are accompanied by the plainspoken chorus, "That's po-dunk, don't give a flyin' hillbilly f--k/ I said po-dunk/ A yard full of chickens and a barn full of junk/ Love is you can, sorry if you can't/ Holler if you is, shut up if you ain't."
Perhaps lending further credence to skeptics who pegged the rumors of a Senate bid as a promotional vehicle for a new album or tour was the second video, "Greatest Show on Earth." The raucous rap-rock song hearkens back to Rock's early days with a career-spanning retrospective of his greatest concert moments, ending with the tease of a 2018 tour.
"I'm the realest motherf--ker and I'm coming of age," the 46-year-old, proudly Libertarian, recently married grandfather raps on the crunchy, guitar-heavy tune that finds him returning to the kind of classic rock-fueled braggadocious hip-hop that launched his career two decades ago. "I'm a space age cowboy shootin' the moon/ I'm a full-blown, down-home rollin' stone/ I'm a cyclone of s--t wherever I roam."
The song's chorus says it all: "Welcome to the greatest/ Love you when you hate us/ Welcome to the greatest f--king show on Earth." The video concludes with the words: "Greatest Show on Earth Tour. Coming to a city near you. 2018," with Rock adding ominously, "Are you scared?"
The latter phrase is what set off all the speculation about Rock possibly taking on Democratic Michigan Senator Debbie Stabenow in the upcoming mid-term election. After being met with skepticism about his intentions, Rock responded on Thursday (July 13) by writing "it's not a hoax, it's a strategy and marketing 101!" The hoax questions came from his Kid Rock for Senate site, which redirects to a Warner Bros. Records page when you click on any merchandise for sale, leading many to wonder whether the Senate run was actually just a promotional stunt for Rock's new music.

"I've got 15 days from my announcement to file paperwork with the FEC! Second, I’m not signed to Warner Bros!!! - which simple fact-checking would have revealed," Rock wrote in a post on his site, trying to clear up claims that the announcement was somehow tied to a music promotion. "I have recently worked out a unique deal with BMG, Broken Bow, CAA and Live Nation to release music ON MY TERMS. Like politicians write books during their campaigns, I'm planning on putting out music during mine and IT ALL STARTS TONIGHT AT MIDNIGHT."
