A legal
practitioner, Mr I feanyi Moses, on Wednesday called on youths who indulge in
crimes to desist from justifying their actions and attributing them to
u
nemployment. Moses gave the advice in an interview with newsmen in Abuja.
The lawyer,
who described the crime rate in the country as “alarming”, said that there was
need to call on the youths, mostly the perpetrators of crime within the system
to order. “One does not need to be employed by another before he or she makes
progress but people must develop their natural skills and talents and use it
for their good. “You hear them say, I am a graduate of a particular school but
I have been jobless for so, so and so years.
“In the age that we live in, where
others have become millionaires through self employment; it is an unjustifiable
excuse. “Help yourselves so that government too can help you. If they don’t,
some other organisations will.
“We have lots of NGOs, international ones, who
watch out for hard working personalities, especially among the youths and they
assist them where need be. “It is really sickening listening to those
unjustifiable excuses for wrong doings and these people are mostly physically
fit.” Moses said that unemployment had undoubtedly a huge impact on the rising
crime rate in the country. He said that while government was putting out
measures to tackle the situation, the people must be patient as the look for
“good and reasonable alternatives” to be effectively engaged in order for the
society to move forward. He called on relevant stakeholders including CSOs and
NGOs to take into consideration both technical and financial assistance for
youth orientation and empowerment programes.
“Government must not relent, so
also non-governmental organisations. “I know there are so many platforms that
handle some of these issues but let us make it very accessible. “Let us
continue to support those outside the labour force through skill trainings and
the likes. “Some have no academic qualifications and in need of remedial
education; scholarships will be good for such groups.” NAN
