At
least 25 MPs have been sent identical death threats, along with a photograph of
person being beheaded, Labour's Chris Bryant revealed today.
Speaking
to LBC Radio, Mr
Bryant said he and "at least two dozen" other MPs had been
sent the email threat, which reads "Warning, I am going to kill you and
kill all of your family."
Mr
Bryant said the MPs who had received the email were from different political
parties, but each had been sent an identical email.
He
said: "I don't want to give too much detail because obviously there is a
police investigation going on now. But the truth is that this is a regular part
of what we're dealing with at the moment."
He
said the internet had "fostered an anger and a bitterness", and that
MPs are still "bearing the emotional scars of losing one of our colleagues
earlier on this year."
He
welcomed Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn's pledge to "chase down and
stop" any online abuse and harassment connected to his campaign and the
broader Labour
party .
But he said: "My anxiety is that I have never known the Labour Party be in such an unpleasant state as it is at the moment with...I mean members of the Labour Party online, day in, day out.
"And sometimes the level of nastiness and demonstrations outside people's offices and all that kind of stuff.
"And
I think Jeremy has been very very slow to act on that. And a lot of this is
happening on Jeremy's watch. I think you need a stronger leader if you are
really going to be able to tackle that."
Mr
Corbyn pledged to tackle the issue of online abuse as he launched his digital
manifesto this morning in London's trendy Shoreditch.
He
said the escalation of online abuse surrounding politics was
"appalling", but noted that he had drawn up a code of conduct to deal
with it.
But
his launch was derailed after it emerged the tech guru behind key parts of his
digital manifesto had encouraged his Twitter followers to tell 'Blairite'
Labour MPs to "shut the f**k up."
