Lazio will offer Stefan de Vrij a new contract in a bid to stop him
joining Chelsea, report the Daily Express.
Antonio Conte’s summer search for defensive reinforcements saw David Luiz
return to Stamford Bridge on Deadline Day, but only after the Blues saw a
number of bids for other targets rejected.
According to reports in Italy, De Vrij was one of those targets, with
Lazio understood to have rejected a £21m bid for the Netherlands international.
An injury-plagued 2015/16 season saw De Vrij fall out of the first team
at the Stadio Olimpico, but he has recovered and is set to be offered a new
deal on his return.
The offer will reportedly see his contract extended until 2020 and his
wages bumped up from £25,000 to £35,000 a week.
De Vrij’s current deal runs until 2018 but the interest of Chelsea, who
are aiming to be back playing Champions League football next season, could be
too much for him to resist if Conte once again comes calling.
