The Divisional Police Officer (DPO ) in charge of Ijeshatedo division, in
Lagos, Yakubu Mohammed, has been arrested for allegedly killing a 25-year-old
fashion
designer, Jamiu Ayoade.
Ayoade was allegedly shot dead on
Sunday evening at a friend’s birthday party on Daudu Street, Ijeshatedo, Lagos.
The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, had, however, said
the DPO denied shooting the deceased but claimed that he and other policemen
visited the area when they got a report that cultists were fighting, which he
said led to the death on The sun news reported that Ayoade, A senior police officer, who spoke on the condition of anonymity,
however, told Daily Sun: “Following media reports on the killing, the
Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, ordered the commissioner for police
to personally visit the scene. The CP sent some undercover policemen to the
house, where the incident happened.”
He said, following reports given by the undercover policemen, the police
boss ordered the arrest of the DPO, who is currently being detained at the
State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, Lagos.
Owoseni, during a press briefing yesterday at police headquarters, Ikeja,
said: “I told you that we were investigating and we had sent undercover
policemen to the family of the deceased and the scene of the incident. We spoke
with many people. We now have true version of the story, contrary to what the
DPO told us.
“The police leadership and the IGP operate and run the police in a manner
that all actions should be in tandem with democratic principles and respect for
human life. We will not condone any act of impunity. All those that are adorned
with police uniforms and get involved in impunity are not one of us.
“The DPO is under investigation. If we find out that he is not one of
those officers that belong to the new Nigeria Police, the law will take its
course.
“The DPO has been taken into custody while investigation is being conducted. I met with
the family of the victim this morning (yesterday) and we found out that it is
imperative that investigation be carried out.
“The Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the SCID, the Area
Commander C and the Commander X Squad
yesterday started the investigation. I will leave no stone unturned and
we will not sweep the matter under the carpet.
“As soon as evidence is put up (implicating) the officer or whoever
committed the act of impunity, justice will take its course and the person will
be made to face the law.”
